The Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta

It is mid-April, and a classic regatta is about to begin here in Antigua. This is by far one of the greatest venues in the Caribbean for nautical photography, and I am excited to know that soon I will be introduced to a new culture of yacht racing and to a collection of yachts I have read and heard stories about for decades. As the race days approach, the romance of English Harbor deepens with the arrival of sailors from around the world, all proud to participate in this premier regatta, unique not just to this hemisphere but to the world of classic yacht racing.

I soon settle into the rhythm of this fabulous environment, the cares of my life in the States quickly fading.

There is a mixture of English and indigenous history here that is rich in tradition and lore, and when the people are sincerely engaged, they are quick to share their story. I find there is an authentic look in the eye and a smile that goes right to the soul, opening the door to a conversation that adds another stroke to the canvas of this scene.

On this morning, English Harbor is calm, and each hull reflects on the water. As I stare down the lines of these vintage classics, I realize they have their stories too. Each has experienced triumph, neglect, despair, and resurrection, and my affection for them soon turns to love. As I prepare for the shoot along with several others here to capture the event, I realize what a unique opportunity lies ahead. This is a photographer’s dream come true, as the following days will present an extraordinary opportunity to witness the prowess of the crews and these majestic yachts under sail.
